Dundes quotes Levi-Strauss as follows: "mythical thought always works from the awareness of oppositions towards their progressive mediation" and "the purpose of myth is to provide a logical model capable of overcoming a contradiction". But, even if it is crucial to Levi-Strauss's theory, I don't believe that it is Levi-Strauss's great innovation. The great innovation is to see on a dinnner table, for example, the wine as having a meaningful relationship to the water. We were previously unaware of the relationship he outlines. It demonstrates the possibility that we make sense of the world through deep structures which were not concious of, at least before Levi-Strauss came along.Nicholas Herrimanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07073544627194777717noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2503139613731943922.post-38026953488140056382018-10-23T20:17:36.284-07:002018-10-23T20:17:36.284-07:00Levi Strauss's basic idea: there is an underly...Levi Strauss's basic idea: there is an underlying structure found observed in all myths. The structure is a set of binaries. The myths establish the binaries (and also help resolve them?).Nicholas Herrimanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07073544627194777717noreply@blogger.com
